BIO: Candidate for Staff Seat

Lisa Zelinger Cohen

My name is Lisa Zelinger Cohen and this is my 16th year teaching at Stargate. I started as a 3rd/4th grade teacher in 2007. When we moved into our new building, I became a fifth grade teacher, where I stayed for two years before moving back down to third grade. When the GATE position was created for the 2021-2022 school year, I felt that I could really dive into my passion for teaching gifted students about themselves and their minds.

As a member of the Stargate community I have served many roles other than teacher. I served as team lead for all of the teams on which I have taught. I have been the spelling bee coordinator for several years and am a team captain for the Noetic Math contest. I have also assisted with the elementary student council. I am a past member of the SIC/RTI (now MTSS) committee and recently was part of the placement policy committee. I have also sat on a number of hiring committees for the school. I feel that I have a strong understanding of the needs of the elementary building and can bring that background knowledge to the School Accountability Committee.

Q&A Responses: Candidate for Staff Seat

Question #1: Why do you want to become a member of the Stargate School Accountability Committee?

Lisa Zelinger Cohen: It is important to have representation from all parts of the community on the SAC. I feel that my strong background knowledge of Stargate and my daily workings with our kids would be a beneficial addition to the committee. I would like to expand my involvement in Stargate beyond the classroom and serving on this committee would allow me this opportunity.

Question #2: How long have you been at Stargate and what has been your involvement with the school?

Lisa Zelinger Cohen: Elementary GATE teacher. I have been a teacher at Stargate since 2007.

Question #3: What skills do you bring from previous experience and/or your profession?

Lisa Zelinger Cohen: I have a knowledge of the community and the history of Stargate. I can reflect on information, data, discussions from both a teacher and a student perspective.

Question #4: What do you see as the most pressing issues for the School and the Board in the upcoming 1-2 years? What do you hope to contribute and accomplish while serving on the Stargate School Accountability Committee?

Lisa Zelinger Cohen: The first pressing issue is how to maintain the gifted education we provide for our students as our population continues to change. Having an entire school community that knows, understands and supports gifted best practices will provide our students with the best experience. Giving the teachers the autonomy to use their expertise in these areas will benefit our students greatly. Maintaining that gifted education is not only an academic endeavor, but also a mental one. It is increasingly more important that the school can provide students the ability to learn about themselves and their mental health. It needs to be a combined effort supported from the Board down to the community at large. I hope to be a liaison for both the academic and the social/emotional side since I now have experience in teaching both and I know what teachers are facing in their classrooms on a daily basis.

I think another issue for the Board will be the facilitation of another transition with the recruitment and hiring of a new executive director. I would like to help with that transition by being a liaison and helping to ensure the needs to of the elementary building are being heard.

Question #5: What is your understanding of the Stargate Mission and Vision? What role do you perceive the Stargate School Accountability Committee plays in serving the Mission and Vision?

Lisa Zelinger Cohen: Stargate's Mission and Vision is what should drive it's every move. We are here to provide a differentiated program designed for the intellectually gifted students. We are here to meet their unique academic as well as social and emotional needs. The education they receive at Stargate from kindergarten to 12th grade should be different than what they could receive at their neighborhood school. I believe that the board and it's committees play an integral role in supporting that mission and vision and making sure that the school is run in accordance with it. I think the Board and it's committees should have an in-depth understanding of what it means to educate a gifted child and that decisions regarding the school should be made using that background knowledge. I believe the board and it's committees should listen to their teachers and other experts when reviewing school policies and curriculum adoptions because they are the ones practicing the mission and vision on a daily basis.

More Info: Staff Seats & the SAC Election

This year, because the number of Staff applicants was equal to or less than the number of seats available, Stargate will ONLY be conducting an election for Parent seats. A Staff election will not be held. Instead, the staff candidate will be sworn in at the next SAC meeting to the 1 open Staff seat.

SAC vs Board elections - the SAC election process is different from the Board election process. In Board elections, open Parent Director seats are voted on by both parents/guardians and Stargate staff members. In SAC elections, however, Parent seats are voted on by eligible parent/guardian members of the Stargate Community. Staff seats are voted on by eligible staff members of the Stargate Community.

New this year - the Election policy was revised in August. This year, for the first time, staff members who also qualify as Stargate parent stakeholders will be eligible to cast ballots for parent seats. In prior years, parents who were also staff members were counted only with the staff community for Election ballot distribution.
