We’ve made some important changes to our elementary Spanish program this year which I am confident will help students get the most out of the time we have. First of all, Specials will be taught as trimester classes (every other day) which should really help. In the past, just as the students were starting to get the hang of what we were doing, the end of the six-week session would come and they’d move on to something else. I’m excited about having them for an entire trimester!
Another even more significant change is that students will be placed in Spanish classes by grade level instead of homerooms. While looping (multi-level classes) works well for some subjects, it does not work well for languages. It will, however, take a couple of years to completely level the content of the classes. For this year, the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders will start the year by reviewing the stories we did last year (so that new students won't be completely lost) and then moving on to several new ones. The 2nd...

1st Grade: We will be reviewing parts of the face and adding a few parts of the body.
La cara – face el pelo - hair el ojo – eye
La oreja – ear la naríz – nose la boca – mouth
El diente – tooth el brazo – arm la pierna – leg
La mano – hand el pie – foot la lengua – tongue
La cabeza – head la cola – tail (for the animals in my “zoo”!)
2nd & 3rd Grades: We have been working with months, days and dates. We will also be working with stories #1 and #2. The stories can be found on the document page of my blog.
4th, 5th & 6th Grade: The students have been completing short study guides for several of the stories that we have studied (#1-5, 7-13 and 16-19). They have been given enough time to complete these in class provided they use their time wisely. All of the completed study guides are due on Monday, Feb. 22 (4th & 6th) or Tuesday,...

1st Grade: We’re to review some of the vocabulary and songs that we worked with this year and last year. We are also working on the days of the week and the months of the year.
2nd Grade: We are working on months, dates and personal pronouns.
3rd Grade: Students that did not get an A or B on the interrogative word quiz will be retaking the quiz on Wednesday. The grades will be averaged together for their final grade on the quiz. The students that will not be retaking the quiz will be working with cognates.
4th Grade: There will be a retake test on the interrogative words and exclamations on Thursday, 2/11. It will be optional. Students who do take the test will be given the average of the two grades as their final grade for the test. The majority of the students did very well on this test so we will not spend a lot of class time preparing for the retake. Students will be responsible for studying at home. The vocabulary sheets can be found on...
