Library Volunteer Celebration

Since October, we have put information on nearly 10,000 books into the new database. Stargate parents and staff are invited to stop by the Library on Monday, May 19, to thank the many volunteers who have contributed their time and expertise in entering in the library inventory to our new Web-based catalog. From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. there will be a congratulatory Open House, complete with treats and goodies. Please come to let these volunteers know how much their efforts are appreciated!

Nearly There!!!

The Data Entry project in the Library is nearly 90% complete! Check out the link from the Library homepage and try out the various searches. While I have not activated the "reserve" feature, parents, staff and students all now can find books and other materials any time!

The Library has been seeing a great deal of use this week, as students in first through fourth grades are working on research. Those involved have learned more about the reputable databases and research resources available to all students. Many have also learned the importance of copyright protection. Thanks for coming to visit!

Come See the "New" Library!

Many things are changing in the Library. Thanks to Mr Ryan's work, there is now over 30% more shelf space. The Young Adult section has a new corner, graced by gargoyles; and the entire range of MPTP (More Pictures Than Print) materials are along the north wall, under the windows. Fifth grade students Elena , Lois and Mackenzie have been a tremendous help in organizing books and the National Geographic Magazine collection. Videos are more accessible to staff, as is the Professional Library. Finally, the inventory input project is nearly 80% complete! The entire Stargate community is welcome to come in and see the progress.

Thank you!

Thanks to all who contributed to another Book Fair success! The Reading Road Trip brought in nearly $300 worth of books to the Library; gave away an additional $300 worth of books, and still produced nearly $2000 to be put into book acquisitions. That's half the primary book budget for next year, and the target we were trying to reach. Your support of the Library is appreciated and will be used by the entire Stargate community.

New Shelves!!!

At long last, the Library has beautiful shelves lining the walls of the former Computer Lab! Come take a look - browse our donations - and thank Mr. Ryan for all of his meticulous work during Spring Break. Future plans include making the south side of the Library more like a classroom, filling the shelves with non-fiction resources, and having a projector and whiteboard available. Come take a look!

Come Take a Reading Road Trip!!

The Scholastic Spring Book Fair will be in the Library Monday, March 17th through Friday, March 21st. It will be open 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. every morning, during the school day after CSAPs (11:00 a.m.), half an hour after school every day, and into the evening (6:30 p.m.) on Tuesday and Thursday.

Preview books, get volunteer information and much more at our Book Fair Homepage. Fill out Student Wish Lists or Gift Certificates using the links below. For more information, contact Valicia McPherson in the Library, or Book Fair Chairperson Kristen Womer (or call 303-450-4222).

Something new we are trying: You can see the schedule and sign up for the time you would like to work by going to www.Google.com/calendar. Use the following to enter the site:
e-mail: stargatelibrary@gmail.com
password: BookFair (all one word; case sensitive)
Go to week of March 16-22, 2008, click on "Create New Event" and put your name in the time slot desired, under the "Volunteers Only" calendar. We need at least two volunteers every hour - and none during CSAP times. To sign in using your personal Google account, e-mail the Library for an invitation to the site. Come in the Library any time for a demonstration and assistance.

Learning 2.0 - Reflection

On Saturday, Feb. 23, I attended a conference at Arapahoe HS called Learning 2.0: A Colorado Conversation.

The best part of the day was the validation I received on the place Web2.0 tools have in education and the classroom. At Learning 2.0, I found others who have been incrementally successful in integrating these tools into their learning environments.

I also valued meeting two of the edubloggers who continue to inspire me through their actions and writings: Ben Wilkoff, and Karl Fisch.

Finally, I saw and experienced several techniques I'd like to implement when planning our next school conference: having wireless access meant being able to follow along on powerpoints (and move forward and back within those, for clarification); and participate in live blogging, and share links and ideas immediately, as well as for future reference. I'd definitely like to do more of this.

If You'd Like To Help

Doug Crone was, according to Patty, an avid reader and historian. Therefore, she has suggested that those who would like to do something for her, in memory of her husband's passing, contribute something to the Stargate School Library. There is now a Wish List of books that the Library would like to have, with types of books and approximate prices under the "Library Information" tab. Books may be purchased and dropped off at the front desk or the Library; or money may be donated - for a specified book or not - with checks made out to Stargate School.

If you have any questions, or need any further information, please call or stop by the Library. Thank you for your concern and your generosity.

Attention Visual Learners!

Friday, February 1st, the staff had an opportunity to hear and ask questions of Jeffrey Freed. Freed is an educational consultant, author and lecturer who specializes in the needs and challenges of visual, or right-brained learners, which often includes those who are gifted, or many with ADHD and learning disabilities. He stimulated a great deal of positive discussion among the teachers, and left copies of his book, Right-Brained Children in a Left-Brained World, as well as one co-written with psychaitrist Joan Shapiro, 4 Weeks to and Organized Life with AD/HD. Both books are available to parents and staff for check-out in the Library.
