Listen to the Wind by Greg Mortenson and Susan L. Roth
This is the children's version of Three Cups of Tea, the true story of Dr. Mortenson who went to Pakistan as a mountain climber and became a builder of schools. This is a heartwarming story of family, friendship, education and hope. The beautiful paper collage illlustrations add a sense of enchantment to this wonderful story. I would recommend this book for all ages!

Peak by Roland Smith
Some teenagers go through a vandalism phase, but few have thought to tag a New York City skyscraper 600 feet off the ground. When Peak (yes Peak, not Pete) Marcello is arrested after climbing and spray painting the Woolworth building he faces some tough choices. Go to a jevenile detention facility until his 18th birthday or leave the country to live with his father the professional climber. Soon after choosing option number two, Peak realizes the father he barely knows has an alterior motive for inviting Peak to stay with him. Now Peak is in a whirlwind race against time, the Chinese government, a local Tibetan boy and nature itself to become the youngest person to ever climb Mount Everest. It's no longer about looking for the biggest thrill, when it comes down to life and death, it's about knowing what's worth that risk.

Leo the Late Bloomer by Robert Kraus, Illustrated by Jose Aruego
Is your child nervous or intimidated by school? This is the book for a child who hasn't quite hit his or her stride yet. Leo is a tiger cub who can't read or write or do many of the things that the other kids can. His father nervously watches and hopes for his son "to bloom." Like all children, when the time is right, Leo learns to do all of the things he couldn't do before. This is an adorable story to remind children that it's okay to learn at your own pace!

http://www.windows.ucar.edu/windows.html
This website provides information on astronomy, the solar system, scientists, space exploration, and weather in a great format that is easy and fun for kids to use. The site has great basic facts, interesting games and goes way beyond with cross-curricular information such as folk-tales, history and mythology as it pertains to space and the universe. Another great feature, is that there is a Beginner-Intermediate-Advanced button at the top of each informational artricle. The articles default to Intermediate and selecting the Beginner or Advanced button will adjust the depth of information, vocabulary level and font size.

Mrs. Rebecca Gates is the new Library Media Specialist, however, she doesn’t have the typical librarian background. She graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with her B.S. in Aerospace Engineering and spent the past five and one half years as an Officer in the United States Air Force. While she enjoyed her time in the military, she realized she wanted something different and found herself spending all her free time volunteering to coach, teach, and mentor at the surrounding schools. Finally, she realized this wasn't a hobby for her and decided to pursue her true passion for education. Mrs. Gates went back to school and is completing her M.A. in School Library and Information Science from the University of Colorado at Denver. She currently resides near downtown Denver with her husband and two dogs. In her free time she enjoys reading, swimming, hiking, traveling and playing rugby.
