Can you believe it's October already? September flew by!

Here is the news for the week.

What We Have Been Doing

Firefighters came in this morning and showed us the equipment they use to put out fires. We got to see all their gear that they wear and they talked to us about fire safety. We also got to see the vehicles they use. It was so much fun to learn about firefighting!

For theme last week we talked about our community. We drew pictures of the buildings in our neighborhood in a mural. The students talked about how their neighborhoods are alike and different. We also had Mrs. Amos come in. She did a lesson on feeling welcome and unwelcome. The students talked about the different situations in school that make them feel welcome and unwelcome.  This week we will begin discussing the human body and the internal parts we all have. Throughout the week ask your child about what they learned about their bodies.

In math we learned about symmetry. The students painted pictures on one side and folded the paper in half to make their painting symmetrical. This week we will look at leaves and flowers and talk about how they are symmetrical. We will observe the veins in the leaves and discuss how they show symmetry as well. We will also make three dimensional shapes with toothpicks and marshmallows. We will talk about cones, spheres, cubes and other three dimensional shapes.

Room Mom

Brenda Forrest has volunteered to be our room mother for this year. Thank you so much Mrs. Forrest for volunteering!

Yogurt Lids and Box Tops

As noted in the STAR news, the school is collecting yogurt lids to raise money for breast cancer. Only Pink Yoplait yogurt lids will be accepted. At the end of this contest, the class with the most lids and caps will be awarded a popcorn and movie party. The contest will end December 21. This is a cause that is very near to me since my mother is a breast cancer survivor. So, if your family eats the Yoplait yogurt, please bring the lids to school with your child.

Also, the school is collecting Box Tops to earn money for the school. Please put the box tops in an envelope or plastic bag with your child's name on it. You can visit http://www.boxtops4education.com/. to see which products contain box tops.

Thanks!

Conferences

In this week's Monday folder there will be a sign up sheet for conferences. Please choose 3 different times so that I can fit you in the schedule. The first sign up sheets I get are the first who get their choices. Also, please note, despite what was said at Curriculum Night, you will not meet with your child's literacy teacher. If you would like to talk about your child with that teacher, please make an appointment. The Kindergarten team has decided that is too early in the year to have conferences for literacy.

Have a great week and thanks for all your support with the classroom!
