What We Have Been Doing-

Math-

Last week we continued developing our skip counting skills. Students learned how to distinguish between a nickel and a penny, and began counting with nickels and pennies. We are still working with money this week. We will discover how to tell time on an analog clock, as well.

Theme

For theme last week we learned how heat moves from hot to cold. We also discussed how important it is too wear warm clothes during this time of the year. We found out how hats keep our bodies from losing heat. We also did some Christmas and Hanukah activities.

This week we will work with more Christmas activities and learn about other winter holidays.

What We Have Been Doing

Math

 We have been working on skip counting with twos and fives. Please help your child practice this concept at home. This week we will focus on money, and using our calculators.

Theme

Last week we learned about Hannukah and Kwanzaa. This week we will continue our exploration of Hannukah. We will learn about Christmas, Divali, and Los Pasodas during the next two weeks.

 

 


Book Orders

Book Orders are due on Friday, December 14, so that we can get the books before Winter vacation. Their are some great gift ideas in this month's catalog.

What We Have Been Doing

Math

 For Math we worked on graphing, and skip counting by twos. We are still measuring the class and observing how much they have grown. This week we will construct a class bridge made of pipe cleaners and straws. We will measure how long our bridge is using inches, feet, and kindergarten hands. We will also work on skip counting by 5s. The students will learn how to play a game called Top It; which is similar to the card game, War.

Theme

For Theme, we learned that there are many types of energy. We focussed on light energy. We will explore heat and sound energy during the next two weeks. We will learn about the Winter holidays throughout the month of December. We will read books and do activities centered around Kwanza and St. Nicholas this week.

What We Are Doing:

Theme:

This week we will begin our science unit on energy. This will cover light, heat and sound energy. Next week we will begin learning about the winter holidays as well as work on our energy unit.

Math:

This week in math we will focus on graphing and counting money.

What We Have Been Doing

Math-

Last week for Math we measured objects based on our own feet. We compared the size of our feet to the standard 12 inch foot measurement. I began measuring the student's heights and comparing the measurements to our September heights. They are truly growing! WOW!

This week we will make a mini book about measurements. We will also do a follow the directions activity for Thanksgiving.

Theme-

Last week in Theme we learned about Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. We also created a Native American story using pictures. The stories will be hung around the classroom for the next couple of weeks. This week we will talk about Neptune and Uranus. We will also learn about the first Thanksgiving.

What We Have Been Doing

Math- Last week we worked with calculators. We learned how to count by ones, twos, tens, and fives with the calculator. This week we will work with measurement and time. We will also play with money.

Theme- We will study the moon phases this week. We will also learn about Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. We will discuss why Pluto is no longer called a planet. We will also do some Native American Activities and learn about the first Thanksgiving.

What We Have Been Doing

Theme

This week we will continue our unit on space. We will focus on our planet and the moon phases. We will also talk about Venus. Remember the moon book homework is due on Friday. We are studying Native Americans in theme, as well. We will read Rainbow Crow this week. We will also finish our poems on color. You can see our wonderful work in the windows or on the bulletin board in the hallway by the end of this week.

Math

For math we will be working on an introduction to calculators this week. We will also start adding and subtracting using manipulatives. The students are definitely ready for this step!

What We Have Been Doing
Theme - We began our unit on space this week. We learned about the sun and imagined what could take us to the moon. This week we will study Mercury, Venus and our moon. Please look at the homework for this week. We have a mini project for the next two weeks. The directions will be in the homework folder. We are also studying Native Americans. Last week we read Arrow to the Sun, a book about the Pueblo Indians. We made puppets to retell the story. The students also learned about Kivas and thought about what their Kiva would represent. It was fun to see all their ideas. This week we will work with the book The Legend of the BlueBonnet by Tomie DePaola. This book is about Native Americans in Texas.

What We Have Been Doing

Theme- We finished our unit on My Body. The students took them home on Friday. Please ask them to point out the different organs we learned and check if they could identify the body part and function. This week we will start learning about Space and Native Americans. We will talk about the night sky and the planets that we can not see from earth, but that are up there. We will learn about the sun, Mercury and Venus by the end of the week.

Math- For Math last week we played snack subtraction. We also worked on the Monster Squeeze game again and we did an activity that focused on pennies=1 cent. Miss Sneeuwjagt's Kindergarten News for October 16, 2007

What We Have Been Doing

For Theme last week we learned about the digestive system and skeletal system. The students added the stomach and intestines to their life size body posters. This week we will add bones and muscles to the posters. The posters will go home on Friday.
For Math last week we worked on identifying the numbers between 10 and 20. We also explored the concepts of more than and less than with a game. Some students may teach the game to you. This week we will revisit the concepts that were taught last week. We will also work with pennies and subtraction.
