What We Have Been Doing

Literacy- We assessed the students’ reading ability last week. The students are doing amazing! We won’t have homework or a spelling test next week, November 24-28, because of Thanksgiving vacation.

Math- We are focusing on money this week. The students will do activities with pennies, nickels and dimes. Please help your child by having them count change at home.

Theme- This week we will learn about the Comanche tribe and we will compare the different Native American tribes that we have learned about in our unit. Next week we will learn about the history of Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Vacation- There will be no school Nov. 26-28 in observance of Thanksgiving.

Yogurt lids- We are still collecting yogurt lids. If your family eats Yoplait yogurt, please send the pink lids in to our classroom.

Jersey Mikes- Visit Jersey Mikes on Tuesday, November 28, to help raise funds for Stargate. Mention Stargate when you check out and Stargate will get 20% of all proceeds. The class with the most participation will win a free Cold Stone Ice Cream party!

Holiday Hop Sock- Friday, December 5^thfrom 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM for the “ 2008 Holiday Party and Sock Hop.” Join us for an evening of fun in the gym for our first ever Sock Hop! We’ll have contests in the gym, and a cookie exchange. There will be a visit from Santa and holiday caroling in the multi-purpose room.

New Specials Rotation- We are in new specials this week. In the morning we have Instrumental Music with Mrs. O’Brien. In the afternoon we have Mrs. Graham–Haradon for Art.

What We Have Been Doing:

Literacy-This week one group will have only 5 spelling words. The rest of the groups will have 7 spelling words. The students are doing great and working hard. Starting December 1^st, we will begin working on our Reader’s Theater.

Math- We will learn a game called “Monster Squeeze” this week. The game will help students learn number sense and the terms “higher than” and “lower than.” We will also explore time and money so more. The students will trace their hands to create a visual for counting by 5s.

Theme- This week the students will learn about the Northwestern Native American tribes. They will create totem poles to show what they learned. We will also focus again on the Pueblo Indians and make Kachina Dolls.

Veteran’s Day- No school tomorrow, November 11, in observance for Veteran’s Day.

Chain of Kindness Party- On Wednesday, November 12, we will celebrate our Chain of Kindness Party. The students may come to school wearing their pajamas. Please make sure they follow the dress code. They can also bring in a stuffed animal. Congratulations Kindergarteners for earning a party so early on in the school year!

Book Orders- If you ordered a book from this month’s book order, the books are in. You will find them in your child’s backpack later on this week. The next book order will come out later this month in time for Holiday gifts!

End of Trimester- Friday, November 14, will be the end of the first trimester. Report cards will be sent home around Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Vacation- There will be no school on Wednesday, November 26, through Friday, November 28, to celebrate Thanksgiving.

What We Have Been Doing:

Literacy: We are all starting new stories this week for literacy. We are also testing the students to see how much they have learned so far this year. We will give you the results in the report cards later this month.

Math: We will work with graphs, money and the calculator this week. We are also comparing the length or our feet to the standard 12 inch foot measurement.

Theme: We learned about the Plains and Pueblo Indians last week. We will learn about the Apache and Southwestern Indians this week. The students are learning about Native American cultures through folk tales.

Halloween: Thank you to Mrs. Spruce, Mrs. Kemp, Ms. Brachtenbach, Mrs. Jain, Mrs. Chambers and Mrs. Schloffman for giving us a fun Halloween party. The students enjoyed making trick or treat bags, working on Halloween puzzles and eating yummy treats. Thank you also to Mrs. Stone for helping us with the costume parade. The students had a great time showing off their costumes for the school and parents. We had a great Halloween this year!

Veteran’s Day: There will be no school on Tuesday, November 11 so that we can celebrate Veteran’s day. School will resume on Wednesday, November 12.

Chick-Fil-A Night: Please join us this Thursday, November 6^th for Stargate Night @ Chick-Fil-A. Come by for spirit night from 5-8pm! Stargate receives 20% of all sales during this event. You MUST fill out a slip at the register or drive-thru, indicating you are a Stargate family, in order for the funds to reach Stargate.

What We Are Doing:

Literacy: We will have our spelling test on Friday after the costume parade. Please have your child study for their spelling test this week. All the students are now working in reading groups and on comprehension strategies.

Math: This week we work on a birthday graph, work with symmetry and estimation.

Theme: The students brought their bodies home on Friday. Please have them point out the various body parts that they learned about and the function of each part on their body. This will help reinforce the concepts that we learned in the unit. This week we are starting our Native American unit.

Book Orders: Book orders are due today. If you still want to order, please order online today or turn in your book order form by tomorrow, October 28.

CSSI: The CSSI team completed their visit to the school. They will report to our school tonight at 7p.m. All are welcome to attend to learn more about our school.

Halloween: We are celebrating Halloween this Friday. All students may wear their costumes to school. Please make sure that your child’s costume follows our dress code. The students will parade around the school at 8:15a.m. You are welcome to join us and watch the parade in the gym. We will have a Halloween party at 1:30p.m. Half-day students are welcome to stay the whole day so that they can enjoy our party. We will have a spooktacular day!

Field Trip: We visited Mazotti’s pumpkin farm last Tuesday. The students learned about how to grow pumpkins and the various types of pumpkins that the farm grows. They also sat in a tipi and learned how the Native Americans used gourds for tools. Finally, they learned to suck Indian corn and how the Native American’s used Indian corn. We had so much fun at the farm. We were lucky that we had a beautiful day.

Good morning parents,

What We Have Been Doing

Math- Last week we learned about our phone numbers and we saw symmetry in nature. This week we will make symmetrical jack o’ lanterns for Halloween and begin working on number stories.

Theme- This week we will finish our unit on the human body. We will talk about the circulatory system, respiratory system and the digestive system. By the end of the week the students will take their body projects home.

Literacy- We have 7 spelling words to learn instead of 5 this week. We will add a couple of spelling words throughout the month until the students have 10 spelling words to study.

Field Trip- We are going to Mazzotti farms on Tuesday. Since the weather is not looking that great, please dress your child accordingly. This is an outside activity and students should come dressed for the day's weather. We will be walking on grass and fields which may be wet or muddy. We advise the children to bring a jacket and to wear tennis shoes or boots and socks. Please remember to pack a lunch for your child.

Halloween- Information about Halloween is in Monday folders. Costume parade is at 1:00p.m. Parents are invited to watch the parade in the gym. Our classroom party will begin at 1:30p.m. Morning students will be invited to stay all day.

Book Orders- Book orders are due next week Monday, October 28, 2008. We will have book orders every month through May.

What we have been doing-

Literacy- The students are working in reading and spelling groups. We will begin reading assessments soon to see how much they have progressed so far throughout the year.

Math- We worked on symmetry last week. This week we will discuss our phone numbers, learn more about symmetry, explore three dimensional shapes and begin focusing on money.

Theme- Last week we learned about the skeletal system. This week we will explore the muscular system and the respiratory system. We may begin learning about the digestion system.

CAGT- I will be attending the Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented annual conference on Monday, October 13 and Tuesday, October 14. I am looking forward to meeting the big names in Colorado’s gifted and talented educators and researchers. I will attend several workshops that are focused on Stargate’s special population of students.

Book Orders- This month’s catalogs will come home today. If you would like to make an online order, please wait until Wednesday, October 15, so that I can set up the orders. Book orders will be due on Monday, October 27.

Firefighters-The Thornton Fire Department will visit Kindergarten on Thursday, October 16th. The theme for Fire Prevention Week is "Prevent Home Fires." Our emphasis will be placed on three general fire safety topics: 1. practicing home fire drills; 2. installing and testing smoke alarms; and 3. checking for and correcting home hazards, including candles

Jackets- Since the days are getting colder, please make sure your child has a jacket for outside. Some of the students are borrowing our “left over” jackets and sweatshirts from

the past years.

PE- Please don’t forget to make sure your child has tennis shoes for PE. If they would like, you can put tennis shoes in their backpack so that they can change before PE.

Since I am at home on Sunday night, I may be missing something. I expect that I will write another newsletter and blog entry later this week.

What We Are Doing:

Literacy: We only had one day of literacy last week. We finished our spelling packets. This week we will begin our literacy daily routines. The students are beginning to understand what is expected of them. Thank you to all the literacy volunteers.

Math: Last week we worked on ordinal numbers. This week we will begin learning about the characteristics of coins. We will also work on writing our numbers correctly.

Theme: We will continue our unit on the Human body. This week we will focus on the skeletal system and the brain. We are also learning about our neighborhoods.

Yogurt lids: Please remember to save your Pink Yoplait yogurt lids. Send them to school with in a plastic baggy with “Lambrecht” written on it. This contest will last through December.

Conferences: It was wonderful to meet with you during conferences. Thank you for coming.

Firefighter visit: On Thursday, October 16^th, the firefighters will come to our classroom to talk about fire safety and show fire equipment to the Kindergartners.

Pumpkin Patch: The field trip permission form will be in Monday folders this week. Please sign the form and send it back to school so that your child may go with us to the Mazzotti Pumpkin Farm on October 21nd. If you would like to chaperone, please indicate on the bottom of the permission form that you would like to come with us. Permission forms are due on October 17^th.

What We Have Been Doing

Math- We have been exploring what pennies, nickels and dimes look like. The students also learned how to use a geometric stencil. They made pictures by putting shapes together. We are also learning how to measure using our bodies.

Literacy- We are working in reading groups now. There will be no homework or spelling this week due to conferences.

Theme- We will share our family crests with the class this week. We are also beginning to learn about the human body.

Conferences- Wednesday dismissal is at 11:30am, morning Kindergarten will leave at their regular time at 11:00am. No school on Thursday or Friday this week. I am looking forward to seeing you at your scheduled conference.

Family Crest- Family Crest projects are due today. If you still need time, please turn them in on Tuesday.

Yogurt lids- The school is collecting pink Yoplait yogurt lids to raise money for breast cancer research.

Specials- Specials will not change this week. We will start PE and computers on Monday, October 6.

Vision and Hearing Screening- Tuesday morning, September 30, the students will be screened for vision and hearing. If we have any concerns about your child, we will let you know.

What We Have Been Doing:

Literacy: We learned about classroom expectations last week in literacy. The students took a spelling assessment so that they have level appropriate spelling words. This week we will begin spelling and reading groups.

Math: We finished our project on sink and float last week. This week the students will be assessed on their concepts of math. The students will measure objects using their hands, feet and other body parts. We will talk about measurement and why it is an important concept. Some students will work in the magnet center. We will continue to improve student's number sense.

Theme: Please read the theme homework for this week. Students will need some help with their family crest project. If your child goes home in the morning, they may complete this project if they would like. Their homeroom grade will reflect their work. The project is due on Monday, October 29.

We are finishing up our unit on Family, The Five Senses and Feelings. We will begin our Human Body unit later this week.

Conferences: Parent-teacher conferences will be here soon. Please fill out the blue form in Monday folders so that we can schedule your conference at your convenience. Conferences will be from Wednesday, October 1st through Friday, October 3rd.

Book Orders: Book Orders are due on Monday, September 22. Please order online or send the order form to school with your child.

Extra Change of Clothes: The weather is getting a little colder. If you did not put a long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt in your child's extra change of clothes, it would be helpful for us to have one.

Specials: Next week we will begin a new rotation in specials. We will have PE and computers. Please make sure your child has tennis shoes either on, or you can send an extra pair with them to school.

What We Have Been Doing-

Math- In Math we found patterns in our everyday world. We noticed that animals have patterns, clothing has patterns and architecture has patterns. This week we are predicting what we think might float & sink and what is magnetic. Predicting is an important math concept to grasp.

Theme- For theme we talked about feelings and the 5 senses. This week we will continue working with the 5 senses. We will also begin our unit on families. Next week there will be a homework project about families.

Literacy- This week for literacy the students will learn the rules and procedures of my classroom. I will assess students for spelling throughout the week. Students will also work in their journals and learn how to fill in a graphic organizer about a story we read in class.

Volunteers-

No volunteers this week. We will need volunteers to come in for literacy on the week of September 22. If you would like to volunteer, feel free to email me or call me. We still need help on Monday and Thursday.

Book Orders-

Book orders are due Monday September 22. You can order online at www.scholastic.com/parentordering Kindergarten. You can also use the order form on the catalog and send it to school before September 22. the class user name is stargatelambrecht. The Password is

Math Homework-

We do have Math homework this week. Most of the math homework will be activities that you can do with your child. It is not necessary to turn anything in. Once in awhile we will have a worksheet for math homework, please have you child bring that back to school of Friday.

Curriculum Night-

It was wonderful to meet all of you at Curriculum Night. If you were unable to come and would like information, please let me know. I can send home my handouts and talk to you about our classroom.

Sept.19-

This Friday, September 19, is a teacher work day. There will be no school on that day.
