Today and tomorrow we will do some review for the final exam. The final exam will cover the materials from this week, the last packet and the packet that is due next week. We will also do two labs later this week.

The final exam is planned for Friday, May 30 and Monday, June 2. The final form has not yet been determined.

Today we will review last Thursday's quiz. Students who got less than 80% will retake the quiz on Thursday. On Tuesday the students will develop their own pH indicators. This lab may take up Thursday as well. On Friday the stuents will design and carry out an acid/base neutralization lab.

I have placed the last extra credit on my blog under the homework tab. Please be aware that students need to find how to do the lab described there. That is part of the assignment.

This week we will cover acids and bases. There will be a short lecture and grading of homework today. The rest of the week will be labs related to acids and bases. The students should expect a quiz this week.

Science notes for the week of April 21, 2008

Today we will practice more balancing of chemical equations. Tomorrow the students will receive the last of their homework packets for the year. It is due on May 19. On Tuesday the students will work on this packet. I will out attending some district training. On Wednesday we will learn about the six types of chemical reactions. Thursday is the choice field trip day. On Friday we will do an acid base lab and introduce acids and bases.

Thank you all for the bottles. I think I have more than enough!! I hope these experiments will go well. The bottles are for the Wednesday Workshops on air pressure. Today is the elements' names and symbols quiz. This week we will learn about molecular formulas and equations and do two labs. The next packet will come out in a week and be due in mid-May.

Week of April 7, 2008: Science Middle School Happenings

First, I need another ten two liter bottles by Wednesday. They must be clean, and unpunctured because we will be pumping them full of air. This is for the Wednesday workshop. This week we will investigate molecular formulas. Tomorrow we will watch a video on elements. If your son or daughter has missed a lab or a test, they should try and make it up on Thursday after school. There will be another packet, but it won't be passed out for a bit. Also, the elements and symbols test is next Monday.

Packets are due tomorrow and we will correct them in class. Any material in the packet is fair game for pop quizzes or short tests. Students should know the material and review it. There will be one more packet this year. This week we will work on learning how to do electron dot diagrams and begin talking about how atoms bond with each other. There will be a lab on Friday. The elements and symbols quiz will be on Monday April 14.

Today (Monday) we are doing a chromatography lab that the students devised last week. They need to finish it today. I have a lab involving the change of matter for tomorrow through Thursday. I'm not sure what we'll do on Friday, but it will be related to Chemistry.

A reminder that the HW packets are due on the Tuesday after Spring Break. There will also be an element/symbol quiz around April 10. I hope everyone has a great Spring Break.

Weekly material for week of Monday, March 10, 2008

On Monday we finished the periodic table simulation. Tuesday through Thursday we will watch a movie on the elements and on Friday and Monday of next week I hope that we will have two labs. The first will be on states of matter changes, and the second on chromatography and the separation of mixtures.

Students know that there is a quiz on the chosen elements and their symbols around April 10 and that the packet is due on April 1. The extra credit is also due on their return from Spring Break.

This week we will cover states of matter and atomic structure. Don’t forget to check out the summer opportunities for students at the various universities in the area. The students received their new packets which will be due after Spring Break–no date announced yet.

There is also some extra credit available. The first is due this Friday. Find the other three states of matter (one is sometimes not counted) and write a paragraph describing each. The second is posted on my homework tab.
