DNA GENEALOGY OPPORTUNITY FOR NEXT YEAR'S CURRICULUM

Next year we will cover some topics in Biology, including genetics.  One of my main hobbies for nearly thirty years has been genealogy.  These two areas have recently been combined as DNA analysis has become more popular.  We have a unique opportunity to participate in a study which we can use next year.  Sorensen Molecular Genetics Foundation is offering free mitochondrial DNA testing (passed from mother to child) for a VERY limited time.   In order to take advantage of this testing, I need the following.

  1. Signed permission slips for permission to participate
  2. Four generation pedigree (or more) chart for each person.

I NEED BOTH OF THESE ITEMS BY JANUARY 30.

High quality pedigree charts include:
•    Names, birthdates, and birth places for 15 or more ancestors
•    Ancestors born outside of the United States
•    Ancestors born more than 100 years ago
•    More than 4 generations along the maternal line

I would especially like to encourage students of non-European descent to participate.  This testing would cost well over $100 if you were to do it on your own (I know - I've done my own and my son's!).  This is being offered free by SMGF.  They are hoping to build their database and to interest young people in this field.  For more information click here.  I would like to use the information next year as we study genetics and perhaps combine it with Ms. Posateri's classes as they study ancient human history.  My ability to do so depends on whether or not a large number of you are willing to participate.  I especially encourage 7th and 6th graders to apply as they will be my students next year.  Please contact me with any further questions.

THIS WEEK

We begin Waves and Sound this week.  Students will be working semi-independently on assignments.  Please see my homework tab under documents for more explanation.  Students should have their work done by early February.  At this time, the final test is scheduled for February 5.
