Wow! It seems like jsut yesterday we were getting ready for summer. Now we're back to work! As we look forward to the school year we will be studying five different areas of language arts - writing, literature, grammar, vocabulary development and public speaking. Studetns will have a variety of assignments including long term, daily and inclass.

Monday - Introduction of Achilles, the sacrifice of Iphegenia
Tuesday - Trojan War Jeopardy to prepare for Thursday's test
Wednesday - Vocab quiz and homework due (epi - words)
Thursday - Trojan War quiz 1 - gods, goddesses and the Greeks
Friday - no school

Monday - review pronouns, write in writing journals, review Trojan War Quiz 1
Tuesday - The Trojans prepare for war
Wednesday - vocab quiz and homework due (nuclear, ribonucleic acid, nucleolus, nuclear membrane, nucleoplasm, nucleocapsid, deoxyribonucleic acid, nucleus, thermonuclear, nuclear fusion, nuclear disarmament); Next week's words - para meaning beside (paradym, paradox, paragon, parameter, paraphernalia, paramecium, marable, paraphrase, parabola, parallel). Due October 1
Thursday - Troilus and Cressida
Friday - pronouns

Another short week because of Cheley...

Monday - creative writing project  - Create a god, goddess or mortal that could help turn the tide of the war.

Tuesday - work on creative project
Wednesday - Friday - No classes because of Team Building.

This week we begin to uncover the world of Ancient Greek Mythology as we work toward the Illiad.

Monday - notes on Greek gods and goddesses
Tuesday - notes on Greek gods and goddesses
Wednesday - vocabulary due (quies & trudos); vocabulary quiz..
            New vocab
Thurday  - notes on Greek gods and goddesses
Friday - grammar  - pronouns!

Literature - Our first unit of the year is Ancient Greek mythology. As we read the ancient myths we look at not only the gods and goddesses but also at the natural phenomenon that the myths are trying to explain.

Writing - we will do some focused writing in our journals on Tuesday and Thursday.

What a great week we had last week! Students wrote about the heroes from their summer reading and compared them to a modern day hero. These writings went through several revisions. If first glance and the final product is any indication, this is going to be great year for writing.

Last week we also decided to move the vocabulary to Wednesdays.

This week, we start off on Tuesday with another writing assignment. In your writing journals, write about the characters, plot, setting, conflict and your opinion of the novel that you read over the summer. These should be in paragraph form, not bullets, but the paragraphs do not have to be connected with transitions, etc. When you discuss the character, include only the significant characters and  be sure to include a quote either by or about them that reveals something about their personality. Also include who you think is the protagonist and antagonist.

Writing: We will be doing an in-class writing assignment on Tuesday. Students need to have their books from this summer and their Reading/Writing journals.

Reading: No specific reading assignment except to bring their summer reading book or the notes from the book to class this week.

Grammar: Late in the week a quick review to see where we are for subjects, verbs and nouns.

Vocabulary: Weekly vocab begins with the Greek roots pono, pose meaning to put or place and prope meaning near. Vocab definition, part of speech, synonym and antonym are due Friday. Quiz Friday.
words: interpose, juxtapose, appositive, supposition, imposter, propinquity, proximity, approximate, rapprochement, reproach.
