By Debbie Posateri on 10/7/2007

Monday October 8th - Students watched the last scene of the movie Glory and discussed it.  You may want to ask your son/daughter about the movie, the students seemed to get a lot out of it and their understanding of the Civil War is much deeper.

I assigned Chapter 11's homework that is due on Tuesday October 16th.  See the attached document below for an explanation of the assignment.

Tuesday October 9th - Students will be working on their Civil War dramatizations.  This is a group project that is explained in a document below.  Presentations will be the week after team building.

Powerschool Grades for Social Studies
By Debbie Posateri on 9/30/2007
Powerschool grades were made public over the weekend.  Please give me until the end of the school day Monday to get the grades updated.  There are a handfull of students who were dropped and added and I don't have all of their grades updated electronically.  Also, I was planning on doing an edit of all classes over the weekend from home but I couldn't get into powerschool from home.  I appreciate your patience as I get the kinks worked out of the electronic gradebook.

9/24 - 9/28 Newsletter Week Review for Social Studies
By Debbie Posateri on 9/21/2007

Monday 9/24 - I will hand back the graded quizzes from Unit 1 and discuss the results.  We will review 4 skills from the quiz that students will be working on throughout the year:  inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning, making inferences, and understanding historical interpretation.  Students will also go over course expectations for quizzes and Era exams.

Next, students will watch a 20 minute video lecture on the Civil War.  It covers what events led up to the Civil War and establishes background knowledge they will need to move forward this week.  Students will then take notes and discuss the main points in the video.  If you miss class today you will need to make up the video lecture at lunch.

9/21 Friday Week Review
By Debbie Posateri on 9/21/2007

It is Friday afternoon and I wanted to blog and let everyone know it was a great week!  The students did some outstanding critical thinking about the Constitution and the discussions ranged from debating current Constitutional Law to analyzing the Constitutionality of different hypothetical situations in the Executive, Judicial and Legislative branches of government.  The goal was to get students thinking like Constitutional Lawyers and it was a success.  In our pursuit of the truth we got off track from our goals for the Civil War Unit.  The work that was scheduled this week for Thursday 9/20 and Friday 9/21 will be condensed into next week's lessons.  I will post a newsletter for next week that reflects these changes so if you were out of class please see me on Monday to get a summary of what you missed.  The make-up assignment will differ from the small group activity that we did in class, but it sho ...

Monday 9/17 - First drafts of the essay assignment from last week are due.  Students will grade their own work with a rubric to get them thinking about their thinking.  Along with the essay and rubric students will hand in the research they did last week which includes the analysis of the photograph stations (primary sources) and the reading notes from Chapter 2 (secondary source).  Ms. Krill and Ms. Posateri will be grading the first drafts over the next two weeks and then we will begin the revision process.

Students will also take an open note and open book quiz on Chapters 1-3.  Below is a quick summary of the essential question for each chapter.  Students should keep this quiz for the first Era Test which will be coming up in the next 3-4 weeks.  (I will re ...
