Please carefully read the blog, as it is updated regularly. Scroll down to see a list of documents that you may be missing. Most of these come home in the Monday folder, but this is a way for you to get a second copy. Holiday party and field trip forms can be found there!

The Sister Carmen Center wishes to thank students who donated items to our Food Drive in December. We donated more than 150 pounds of food to assist those in need during the holiday season. Good job Stargate students!

Mrs. Westdyke’s Class

Thank you to everyone for the great holiday gifts. I am always overwhelmed by the generosity of Stargate students and their families. I am working on individual thank you notes that will go home in the Monday folder over the next couple of weeks. Please note that I will be out of town on Thursday and Friday of this week to attend my nephew’s wedding. Mrs. Spriggs will be the substitute in my classroom. I hope to hear great reports about your stellar behavior!

LITERACY: Welcome back from the Winter Break! I was impressed with the quality of your final projects for A Christmas Carol. I enjoyed reading through them and seeing how much you learned during this unit of study. This piece will be placed in your Portfolio, and will not be going home in this week’s Monday folder. This week, we will do some mid-year reading and writing assessments in class. We will also begin a new mystery unit. Students will receive a children’s version of a classic novel (Sherlock Holmes,...

In conjunction with our reading of A Christmas Carol, my Literacy class is conducting a food drive for a local food bank. Please bring canned goods and non-perishable items to my classroom if you would like to participate in assisting those in need.

Parents, we need your help. Eight people signed up to bring in items for this Friday's holiday party. Of those, six signed up to bring paper goods. We have very little food coming in at this point.  I have left some messages and e-mails. Please respond if you can help out. Here is what we have so far:

Chaperones: Mrs. Galyon (ornament project, game), Mrs. Thompson (class game), Mrs. Carlson, Mrs. Kallis, and Mrs. Lineham (photographer)

Food:

Emily L.: Clementinue oranges Alex: Juice boxes and banana bread" Monica: plates and napkins (already delivered) Kyra: brownies Bailey: fudge, maybe popcorn Tate: cups Julia: cupcakes Jeremy: cheese and crackers

Other: Calvin: holiday pencils Julia: something for treat bags

We also need a donation of the treat bags. Thanks so much for these great kids and all of the help you provide to our classroom.

LITERACY: This week, students will finish reading and discussing the classic novel,   A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Please check my calendar on the website, as it contains details about homework assignments for the week. In conjunction with our study of Victorian England and the meaning of poverty and charity, we will have a food drive. Please send in three non-perishable food items (canned goods or boxed goods with a long shelf life like Hamburger Helper, Mac-N-Cheese, etc.). Students will decide on a local organization that they will make this donation to in honor of this special season and our new understanding of what is means to be generous.

MATH: This week, we will continue to work in Chapter 3: Integers. Students will have homework from Lesson 3.5 and Lesson 3.6. We will also continue to practice with earlier concepts, specifically absolute value and positive and negative integers. Our class did a fantastic job presenting their original Math Concept Books to younger...

MATH: This week, we will continue to work in Chapter 3: Integers. Students will have homework from Lesson 3.3 and Lesson 3.4, adding and subtracting positive and negative integers. Students will also be presenting their original Math Concept Books to younger Stargate students during read-aloud this week.

**Date Change to Monday**

For this mini project, students will create a miniature-sized artifact that reflects something they have learned about the Viking and their explorations. We will build a mini museum in class to house our artifacts. Please make sure the objects are no larger than 4 inches x 4 inches x 4 inches, as each student will have one small box to display their artifact.

Here are some ideas we had in class: goblet, jewelry, bed, helmet, ship, etc. Use the medium of your choice (sculpture, construction paper, wire, etc.) to create the item. The item must be handmade, not store-bought.

In addition, students should research their choice and create a bullet point list of 10 facts with at least two bibliographic resources to teach the other kids what they have learned.

LITERACY: This week, students will continue reading and exploring the classic novel,   A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. After participating in a group of centers early in the week, students will work in small groups to create a center which they will then share with the class. As a reminder to parents, some of the language in this book is difficult. It will help if you read aloud with your child, even if you re-read pages he/she has read independently. Please do not encourage your child to read ahead. Please check my calendar on the website, as it contains details about homework assignments related to the reading.

MATH: Last week, students wrote letters to teachers of other grades (younger Stargate students) to whom they would like to present their math concept books as a read-aloud. We will deliver those this week, and make arrangements for read-aloud dates and times.  In the book, we will begin to work in Chapter 3: Integers. Students will learn how to graph positive and negative integers on a number line, and find the opposite and absolute value of an integer. Outside of the book, we will continue to practice problem-solving techniques. Look for homework two or three nights this week.
