Keystone Science School Preparations
By Stephanie Westdyke on 10/29/2007

KSS will be here before we know it! Our class goes to KSS November 7-9. The deadline for all paperwork was today. Please be aware that it is critical that all pieces of information are completed. Today I am sending home (see Monday folder) the Adams 12 Medical Form. This form MUST be completed, regardless of whether or not your child takes medications. If your child does not need medications, you do not have to have a doctor's signature. Simply write "NO MEDS" across the top of the form, and sign and date it. Please review the list of items needed. A copy is posted under the 5/6 Team documents. Make sure clothing items fit. Also, if your student will not be attending KSS, he/she must complete the alternative assignment, also posted on the 5/6 team page. Students not attending KSS will not come to school at Stargate on the 7th-9th.

The donations will be collected and assembled into beautiful baskets at that time.

Mrs. Westdyke's Monday Letter: Week of October 22
By Stephanie Westdyke on 10/24/2007

LANGUAGE ARTS:  We are well underway with two writing projects. Students should be through about 2/3 of the way through their semester book at this time. We discussed the 5-paragraph essay on Thursday of last week. Students can begin writing as soon as they have completed their books. We are also working daily on the themed children's books (Fall, Halloween, or Thanksgiving). These will be illustrated and shared with younger Stargate students later this month.

By Stephanie Westdyke on 10/19/2007

We have started to talk about 1st Trimester Projects. Most students have narrowed down their project topic at this point. They can select any topic related to colonial life, the Revolutionary War, inventions and inventors, or matter. Please note that a student/parent packet of detailed information including due dates will come home in the Monday folder on 10/22.

Theme: Matter Investigations
By Stephanie Westdyke on 10/18/2007

A set of Matter Science Experiments came home with your child on Wednesday. Please select two of the experiments (other than oobleck) and perform them at home. Please note that some experiments do require adult supervision and the use of a heat source. For each experiment, students need to write up:

1. hypothesis

2. observations before and during the experiment

3. conclusions reached after the experiment

This should be done in the Theme notebook and returned to school on Friday.

Keystone Permission Slips and Information
By Stephanie Westdyke on 10/16/2007

I am pleased to announce that Mrs. Tufford and Mr. Lineham will be chaperones on this year's KSS field trip. Please note that the actual permission slip is coming home in today's Monday folder on green copy paper. The cost for the trip is $185 per student. Please note that it all medical and permission slips are due at Stargate no later than Monday, October 29th. This only leaves you two weeks to get a doctor's appointment if your child will need medication of any kind administered during the trip.

Bartholomew and The OobleckWe are having fun exploring matter. We made a batch of class oobleck, with mixed results. We are going to try a new recipe during Theme on Tuesday. Ask your child what they have learned so far!

Keystone Science School Field Trip Information
By Stephanie Westdyke on 10/6/2007
My class is going to KSS November 7-9. Thank you to those of you who volunteered to chaperone at this important learning experience. I am in the process of contacting people on the list to finalize our two chaperones, one female and one male. I had several parents sign up, and am sorry that we can't take more of you! Background about the field trip as well as important medical forms are going home in the Monday Folder on the 8th. Please carefully review them. All three forms need to come back for each student, regardless of whether they take daily medications. Scholarships are available, for partial and whole amounts. Please contact me or the front office staff directly if you need assistance, as it is a wonderful opportunity for the students and I would love for everyone to attend.
