May 12

The field trip to Eastlake has been postponed due to the weather. Our trip will now be on Monday. Students will need a lunch, bottle of water, sun screen, hat, and their field journals. Students should have finished reading As Far As the Eye Can See. We will be working with information gleaned from our reading to discuss the Corp of Discovery expedition. Students will also be gathering information on their choice of plant and animal identified on the expedition.

Growing Plants

Our classroom turns out to be a great place for sprouting new plants. Seeds are germinating quickly and the sugar peas are growing at extreme rates!

This week we will continue looking at the growth of our nation, focusing on the Louisiana Purchase and will start studying about the expedition of Lewis & Clark. We will also continue studying plants and doing more nature journaling.

Spring

Today the students will share their timelines of the events and growth of the country under the first two presidents. We will take advantage of the nice day to continue nature journaling and will begin studying plants. We will also continue discussing the nervous system, focusing on the brain. They should expect to have homework each day, but it shouldn't take them more than 20-30 minutes.

Respiratory System

Blood typing was very interesting and the students were very brave. We’ve discovered we are an uncommon class (I think we knew that already). We have more of the two least common blood types than the two most common.

This week we will study the respiratory system, looking at the parts, their functions, and how to maintain a healthy respiratory system.

Constitution

This week we will be focusing on the Constitutional Convention: the key participants, the passions and compromises, evidence of the influence of past events, and how those things are still present in our government and country today. We will also continue to follow the candidates in the presidential primaries and discuss events as they unfold.
