Literacy: Students are painting their POI (person of interest) masks and monologues. Students will have time to finish their masks, memorize their monologues in order to perform them this Thursday or Friday. I am still unsure as to the schedule this week. I’m still aiming for students to perform on May 20 and 21st. Parents are welcome to watch students perform these monologues. I’ll send home more information regarding these performances when I find out our schedule this week.
Math: Students will spend the week finishing their projects. On Friday they started working on hands-on project options and problem-solving handouts. I expect students to continue working on these projects the remainder of the week. In honor of our last day in math, Friday we will play math games.
Theme: Students are required to submit their finished “Guide Book” sheets Monday afternoon. We will combine these sheets for a class guide book to aid us during our walking field trip* on Wednesday. Our study of Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery will come to close as we move on to the events that led up to the War of 1812.
*Apparently, the weather on Wednesday is supposed to be filled with rain and scattered thunderstorms. If this is the case, we will not go on our field trip. I will keep students posted on the status of our trip.
6th Graders have a special project they are working on for our final week of school. They will be presenting on either the 24th or 25th. I will continue to touch base with them; however, I encourage parents to also check-in on their progress.
Monday Letter 4/19
Literacy: We will not have Spelling or DLR this week due to ERB testing.
On Tuesday, each student is required to have their biography completely read and notes taken. We will work on report writing (expository writing). My goal is for students to develop skills in formal writing. We will work on these reports in class this week.
We will start an art project related to our biographies the week of April 26th (I accidently wrote May in my previous Monday Letter), and could use any new or used acrylic paints and/or paintbrushes. All colors of paint are welcome! Thanks!
Math: We will continue to work on Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery mathematics. We will work with fractions, decimals, percents, ratios and surveying.
Theme: Students are excited to study Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery. Everyone has received a Nature Journal along with a letter and syllabus outlining my requirements for completion. It is my expectation that students have their Nature Journal with them every day. We will begin our botany study, with students planting seeds and beans (we were unable to start last week).
Our thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Hardee for an amazing presentation! We enjoyed role-playing and discussing the importance of empathy in the doctor/patient relationship. We were extremely grateful for the time they spent with us. Our class will continue to discuss and model empathy as a value essential in developing character.
Monday Letter 4/12
Literacy: Students should continue reading their biographies and taking notes. They are expected to have both completed ...

Monday Letter April 5th
Literacy: Students were assigned to have an autobiography or biography in class on Monday. I will distribute a project sheet on Monday outlining the due dates for their assignments. My goal is for students to improve their ability to: determine importance, take effective notes, and improve report writing skills. They will have specific homework assignments to guide them in the process of preparing for their writing. We will work on the reports in class starting the week of April 19th.
We’ll also continue our focus on descriptive writing along with strong word choice.
DLR packets will be distributed Monday, and should be completed by Friday. Students are required to have an adult check and sign each daily assignment.
Math: We continue to study decimals, percentages, and fractions. Students will have a “Check-In Quizzes” each day this week to prove their understanding of the skills we’ve been covering. Our mid-unit assessment will take place on Thursday (covering Lessons 1-55). I recommend students check their math homework with an adult every night it is assigned (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday night).
Theme: On Monday, students will recite the Preamble of the Constitution to a partner. Students will give each other feedback on their performance. Students will continue to work on their Amendment Mural Project in class all week. These projects will be due Friday, April 9th. They will receive a homework packet on a court case relating to his or her Amendment. These packets will be due next Monday, April 12th.
