This week in math, we will continue our study of Unit 7 ~ Probability and Descrete Mathematics. The following objectives will be covered this week:
1. Calculate the probabilities of the outcomes of chance events.
2. Use Venn diagrams to analyze situations.
3. Analyze games of chance to determine whether or not they are fair games.
4. Investigate the effects of guessing on multiple choice tests.
No homework this week, however, please remind your child to stay caught up in his/her math journal. These may go home as long as they are send back to school the next day.

LITERACY: This week we will be reading chapters 6 and 7 in our mystery novel. In addition, we will be learning about pronouns. Since we are trying to lighten the homework load so students can work on their state projects, there will not be a spelling and vocabulary test this week. For homework the students will be making a Sniglet book to finish up our study of prefixes, suffixes, and base words.

MATH: This week we continue Unit 9 and learning double-digit multiplication. The students were so excited about learning the partial products multiplication method last week! They really seemed to understand it and wanted to do more problems. We will continue to practice this method and, in addition, learn another method called lattice multiplication. The reason for teaching so many different methods is to eventually give the students the option of choosing the one they prefer.
HOMEWORK: Monday – HL 9.7
Tuesday – HL 9.8
Wednesday – HL 9.9

Mrs. Bustamante Literacy
- Went over the vocabulary for chapters 3 and 4. I will discontinue the vocabulary tests for the rest of the year and just have a spelling test each Friday. We will, however, have a vocabulary activity on each set of words. This last week they created a yellow page from the phone book with their words. Some are very funny and creative!
- Completed affixes-a little hard for them, but we will continue to work on it. Added a list of root words and their meanings to their prefix/suffix folder. They can use these for their homework assignment on Sniglets.
- Watched Grammar Rock on Pronouns, practiced locating and using pronouns.
- Did a prompt on Wednesday about playing baseball with Martians.
- Worked each day on gathering information for their content report.
- Read chapters 3 and 4 in our book and will continue with new vocabulary, activities, questions, and collecting information.
- Homework due on Friday—Sniglets. Spelling test on Friday—12 words from chapters 3 and 4

Mrs. Bustamante Math
- We worked hard this week on our polyhedrons. They finished creating a pyramid, cube, rectangular prism, tetrahedron, octahedron, and for those who wanted to, they made an icosahedron and a dodecahedron.
- They completed a chart that asked how many faces, vertices, and edges. Then they were to see if Euler’s Theorem ( vertices + faces - edges = 2) worked for their polyhedron. The dodecahedron was a real challenge.
- I have some Zome Tools that they are using to create a polyhedron to explore faces, vertices, and edges. They will also have to tell me the shape of each face.
- Began to work on two digits divided into three digits this week. I will continue to have them practice every day on it.
- We will begin probability this week with dice, spinners, and cubes.
- Study Guide for geometry sent home today—Test May 16. Homework due on Friday—area, computation (multiplication and division)

Zelinger's Literacy Week in Preview and Review 04/28-05/02
If your kiddoe is writing in his/her free time, have them share it with you. Have conversations about organization, focus, content...these are the same conversations we are having here at school!
We are beginning to decrease the amount of homework as the deadline for the State Fair gets closer. I will not be sending home literacy packets for the remainder of the year. I handed out the book talk requirements and that will be due on Friday, May 23rd. The homework you will see from now on, if any, will be unfinished classwork.
As we come to the end of the year and are preparing to move on to different grades, I will no longer be offering make-ups on assignments/tests receiving a D or an F. This policy will continue to be in effect at the beginning of next year and beyond.
Coming this week: 05/05 - 05/09:
- Vocabulary test ch. 9-12 Monday 5/5: no make-ups for failing grades
- Continue reading Chasing Vermeer: chapters 13-16
- Activities and discussion for new chapters
- Review Literary device: Cliffhangers
- Continue charting the mysteries and resolutions in our book
- Continue to work on solar system content report: finish researching this week
- Students should be working on reading their books for their book talk on Friday, May 23rd
Highlights from the past week:
- Vocabulary test ch. 5-8 Monday 4/28: no make-ups for failing grades
- Continued reading Chasing Vermeer: chapters 9-12
- New vocabulary
- Discussed what happened in these new chapters
- Literary device: foreshadowing: What is it? How is it being used in the book?
- Literary device: plot: charting the mysteries thus far...
- Continued working on Solar System content report: how to research; taking notes
- Two library visits: Mrs. McPherson talked to us about how to research on the computer. I linked the library site to my homepage (look under useful links). She taught them how to use EBSCO and Worldbook online. She also spoke to us about plagiarism and copyright law
- Handed out requirements for Book Talk assignment on Monday, 4/28. Book talks will be on Friday, 5/23

Zelinger's Math Week in Preview and Review 04/28-05/02
As explained on curriculum night, math homework should be expected nightly from my class. If I feel that a concept was not fully understood then I will hold off on assigning homework. My calendar is updated every afternoon as to what has been assigned and when it is due. If there is an assignment, it is due the following day unless I specifically note otherwise. Students may turn in assignments one day late for 10% off, after that it will be recorded as a zero in my gradebook. Copyright law prohibits me from making assignments available on the web, however, my calendar will provide you the title of the assignment so that you know what is due.
Your kiddoe has an assigned day that he/she should turn in his/her math journal. I collect them on that day and grade the pages we've completed. Incomplete pages are to be finished and ready for the following week. I give the kiddoes a catch up day every Friday during game day and they are free to catch up if they finish the day's work any day. Students may also stay in during snack recess to get caught up. Beginning after Spring Break, if a kiddoe has an incomplete when I collect his/her journal and does not complete it by the following time I collect their journal, it will be entered as a 0 in my gradebook and no make-ups will be given. For example, if your kiddoe's day is Monday and I mark a page incomplete, they have until the following Monday to complete the page.
As we come to the end of the year and are preparing to move on to different grades, I will no longer be offering make-ups on assignments/tests receiving a D or an F. This policy will continue to be in effect at the beginning of next year and beyond.
We have started decreasing homework as the due date for the State Fair gets closer. Students may not have math homework every night OR their homework may be to complete the classwork from the day.
Coming up this week: 04/28 – 05/02
- Begin unit 1 in 5th grade Everyday Math: number theory
- Score Student Reference Book scavenger hunt
- Students not finished with 4th grade Everyday Math journal pages will be completing them for homework this week. All pages due by 5/9
- Continue working on multiplication/division facts
Highlights from the last week:
- Used this week as a catch up week for the last pages in the 4th grade Everyday Math journal.
- Students who had completed their journals worked on multiplication and adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators
- Each student wrote a question that they thought might appear on a final test for Rates
- Introduced fifth grade Everyday math: Unit 1: Number Theory by doing a Student Reference Book scavenger hunt
- Continued working on multiplication and division facts
