Mrs. Bustamante’s Homeroom

  • Began the human skeletal system with its five functions (jobs).
  • Began to learn the scientific names of the bones and common names.
  • Colored coded bones on the human skeleton to be used later in comparative anatomy.
  • Observed “real” bones from the grocery store, fossil bones, and some bones found on the prairie.
  • Practiced using a skeleton to give the scientific names for the bones, also the common names.
  • Did a science experiment showing how bones protect the body.
  • Will do an experiment showing why bones are round shaped.
  • Will use some pictures of dinosaur skeletons to do some comparative anatomy.
  • Will make a replica of a growing bone, and a model of the spinal cord.
  • The owl pellets have arrived!  This will be the large activity for this unit on the skeleton.

Mrs. Bustamante’s Literacy

  • Handed in questions from the first two chapters and handed in the vocabulary activity—graded on a rubric.
  • Literary device: simile-defined, discussed, located in text, and explained as to why a writer would use such device. Will begin to look at the literary device personification
  • Wednesday prompt, rules for plural nouns, and analogies done.
  • Did some thoughtful thinking between what is happening in the first two chapters and how it can connect with your own life.  Must say some of the connections are excellent!!
  • Completed our vocabulary activity, began vocabulary for the next chapter Petang, and began to read the next chapter Petang.
  • Will write a news paper article about finding the Calusa cave.
  • We are completing our personal narratives today.
  • No Homework this week.

Mrs. Bustamante’s Math

  • Review Least Common Multiple, Greatest Common Factor, prime and composite numbers.
  • Worked on identifying the Rules of Divisibility—this will help them when factoring numbers to their primes.
  • Learned about exponents, bases, factor form, exponential form, and standard form.  Did LOTS of practice on all of the exponent skills.
  • Learned to factor numbers to their primes, write in factor form, and then in exponential form if it applies.
  • We practiced some problem solving techniques, and I gave them a problem to do and then write about how they solved the problem.  I will be do more of this problem solving.  Ask about “Joe” in Indiana and why he is so important to writing about math.
  • We will soon begin fractions and decimals.
  • No homework this week.
