I hope you and your families had a nice Thanksgiving weekend. We are going to Celestial Seasonings this Thursday. The students will need to bring a sack lunch and dress appropriately. This field trip is part of our economics unit and will give them a better understanding of how a business does marketing and manufactures a product.

Thanks to all you parents for the great turnout at conferences. It was good to discuss your child's progress. Both of us working together will ensure the success of your child this year.
On another note, Mrs. Studt has spearheaded our gala gift basket this year and it's a good one. Her friends donated their condo in Keystone for a weekend. We're putting together a "mountain getaway" gift basket to go along with it. Mrs. Studt is looking for donations such as handwarners, Keystone ski hats, coffee mugs, etc. She will also take a check (made out to her) or cash to help purchase the basket. Let's all chip in, it's for a good cause.
I will be contacting parents to volunteer for our Halloween party during the afternoon of Wednesday, October 31th. (I have the list from Back to School Night.)

Conference times will go home in their weekly folders. We have an 11:30 dismissal on Wednesday and we're back in school on Tuesday, October 16th. I'm looking forward to meeting with you to discuss your child's progress.
In social studies we are learning about our great country. The class is going to Mrs. Bustamante's room on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for the next month. They'll be studying the midwestern states. We also took the map skills quiz to finish up the unit.
In science, we conducted a science experiment in which we proved that air takes up space. We used the scientific method to write up our results. We watched a video on clouds and discussed how cloud formations can help predict weather.

The conference times request form goes home today. Fill out your first and second choice and we'll do our best to accomodate you.
We are finishing up with map skills next week. We'll be learning about the "south central" states as part of our unit on America next. Here's what we've been studying this week...
In social studies, we located the continents and major oceans on a map. We also watched a video on maps and globes and learned new vocabulary.
In science, we learned about the various types of clouds. Then we used cotton balls to shape these clouds, glued them to construction paper, and labeled them.
We have a quiz on maps this Wednesday. (The study guide is in their homework folders.)

I want to thank all of the parents who attended Back to School Night this past Wednesday. Also, if anyone is interested in organizing book orders, please let me know. This week in theme we...
* Learned about the basics of our Constitution. (It was Constitution Day on Monday.)
* On Thursday we finished a big map project. We created our very own Treasure Island. It consisted of a compass, legend, and landforms on the island. We determined where the treasure was buried then wrote detailed instructions to find it. Finally, our peers had to locate the treasure using our directions.
* In science we studied the components of the "scientific method". We'll use this method when we do future experiments.
