Vaughan’s Voice – May 24, 2010
Well, it’s already the last week of the school year. I can’t believe how fast it has gone. I always have mixed feelings when I write this last letter of the year. It is time to say goodbye to my fourth graders which I have got to know over the past two years, but look forward to seeing the third graders grow and become leaders of our class.
I really appreciate all of the kind things that you have done for our class throughout the year – from sending in any items that were requested to volunteering on field trips to helping out at parties. Our class would not function so wonderfully without your kindness, hard work, and everything you do for your kids to help them succeed.
THIS WEEK:
The students are allowed to wear sports attire all week.
Monday and Tuesday: Our State Fair will be Monday and Tuesday from 8:30 to 10:00 and 10:30 to 11:30. The students need to bring in their food sample for 25 on Monday only. Parents, relatives, and friends are welcome to come in on Tuesday from 8:30 to 10:00 to see all of the wonderful presentations.
Wednesday: We are asking for parent volunteers for Field Day on May 26th. This year the volunteers would stay with classes as they go from station to station. Also, there will be no hot lunch served, so please send a sack lunch in with your child. Theme is World Cup (soccer, in case you don’t know) so the kids are allowed to wear soccer jerseys, or any type of sports jerseys.
Thursday: Last day of school – please pick your child up at 11:30 a.m. We will have a small party. I will supply drinks and if you would like to send in a snack for your child to share, I would appreciate it. In addition, we will be looking at pictures that I have taken throughout the year, and cleaning desks and the classroom. The fourth graders will be going up to the 5th and 6th grade classes to learn what to expect for next year and the third graders will tell the upcoming students what to expect when they reach third grade.
THIS SUMMER: Please have your child read and write as much as possible to keep those skills sharp. In addition, here are some things you can work on to help him/her be ready for our new Singapore Math curriculum next year: 1) Memorize addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. 2) Have them count money and figure out change when they buy items. 3) Tell time and figure elapsed time on an analog clock. 4) Measurement – have them help cook in the kitchen, or if you have projects going on around your house, have them help measuring. One easy way to keep their attention is to give them problems while you are driving, whether it is to the store or on a long vacation.
STATE FAIR
Hopefully your child is just about finished with the State Fair project. It is due on Monday, May 24th. The State fair will be in a very similar format to the Economics days. On May 24th, the 3/4 students will be looking at other students’ projects. On May 25th, parents may come in from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. REMINDER: The students are to bring enough food samples for 25 students on Monday only. We will not be handing out food samples on Tuesday.
YEARBOOKS- There will be an assembly from 1 – 2 p.m. on Friday. Then from 2:00 to 2:45 the students will be getting their yearbooks if they ordered one, and then we will have a school-wide yearbook signing party. If you did not get a yearbook and would like one, there are a few extras that will be for sale for $45.00 in the lobby at the same time on Friday. If they don’t have a yearbook, I will make an autograph book for them. Also, they will be selling colored Sharpies. Sorry, I do not know the price.
Here’s what coming up:
-May 21st – last day for Literacy and Math
-May 24th & 25th – State Fair
-May 26th – field day – the theme is World Cup; wear soccer jerseys (or any professional team jerseys)
-May 27th – last day of school
Thank you so much to everyone for the kind notes and wonderful food that were sent in for Teacher Appreciation Week. I really appreciate each and every one of you also. You do so much for the school and your children.
We have another busy week coming up. On Tuesday, the Museum of Nature and Science is coming out to our classrooms to help us build and send off rockets in the field (or Multi-purpose room if the weather is bad). On Thursday, we are going to the Denver Mint and Art Museum.
We are asking for parent volunteers for Field Day on May 26th. This year the volunteers would stay with classes as they go from station to station. Also, there will be no hot lunch served that day so please send a sack lunch in with your child.

Homework:
On Friday, I did a check-in with the kids to see how much work they have done on their State Fair projects. Many of them have not started anything. If your child is one of these, PLEASE make sure they get started today! As I have said before, this project has six parts and it cannot be done the night before it is due. If your child can’t find the requirements that were sent home, please look under my documents on my blog for the State Fair project.

The students’ digestive system projects were amazing! We had some fabulous PowerPoint presentations, creative children’s stories and travel brochures, informative posters on other animals’ digestive systems, and one very entertaining skit by Evan Johnson.
We have finished our human body unit and are moving on to the Solar System. This week we will learn where we are in our Solar System and learn about the many astronomers and their various theories. In addition, every student will be doing a content report on one of the planets in their literacy class.
Homework: Hopefully your child showed you the State Fair project that I gave out last Monday. This project has a lot of parts (six) so please make sure he/she is beginning to work on it. I will be checking in with them weekly to make sure they have done some work. If I find that one of them has not worked on it, I will be emailing or calling home. Mrs. Vaughan began her teaching career three years ago at Stargate and has thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of teaching and the fantastic students at our school. It definitely is more exciting and rewarding than the many years she spent in the business world as a bookkeeper. Five years ago, after spending years of thinking about becoming a teacher, she finally decided to go back to college and get her teaching license. She earned her master’s degree in education from Regis University.
Mrs. Vaughan has been married for twenty four years and she has three children. Her oldest son, Forrest, is a sophomore at Colorado State University. Their daughter, Morgan, is in eleventh grade, and her youngest son, Sawyer, is in ninth grade. They both attend Horizon High School.
Colleen keeps very busy outdoors. She loves to work in the yard and grow a salsa garden and flowers every year. She’s a huge sports fan and loves to play soccer and volleyball.
