A place to update what is happening in our classroom

Update 5/5
By Laney Powers on 5/5/2008
There are only 24 days left of school, and we are finishing off the year in full force! We only have three more weeks of switching for math and literacy. We will then finish off the year with insect presentations in homeroom. I will be creating a schedule so that you may come and watch your child on his or her presentation day! =)

Chick-fil-A
By Laney Powers on 4/21/2008
We won the last Chick-fil-A Spirit Night, so our class will be enjoying a chicken nugget and lemonade party on Thursday during theme time! Thanks so much to everyone who participated!

Update 4/21
By Laney Powers on 4/21/2008
Thank you so much to the volunteers who helped with the Overnight. The kids had a great time, and thanks to you, the adults survived! It is really nice to have so much parent support!

Overnight
By Laney Powers on 4/11/2008
Please make sure that you turn in the $15.00 fee, field trip permission slip, and movie permission slip for the overnight! The kids are getting excited, and I think we will have lots of fun (and be exhausted)! Thank you to everyone who signed up to volunteer. I will make sure to have a list of volunteers in Monday's newsletter. Have a great weekend!

Update 2/25
By Laney Powers on 2/25/2008
Please note that the end of the second trimester is this Friday, February 29th. Please check PowerSchool to make sure that your child has turned in any missing assignments. Report cards will be sent out sometime in mid to late March. On Monday we will begin a new specials rotation with Spanish and Computers!

February 11th, 2008
By Laney Powers on 2/11/2008
Many of the students have been picking up on the current adult issues surrounding the school. It is hard as a teacher to field and discuss some of their questions, and I don’t feel it is appropriate for me to talk to them as a class. I do want you to be aware that they are overhearing parents discussing things, so that you may speak to them as you feel it is necessary.

Please note that my role at Stargate is first and foremost being a teacher. I am not in a position to discuss my personal views or your personal views on the political climate. It puts me in an awkward situation. As a parent I hope that you will respect this. I care about each and every one of your children and want what is best for them. Thank you!

Update 1/10
By Laney Powers on 1/10/2008
I hope that everyone had a wonderful vacation and has been able to get back into the routine of things. We have picked up right where we left off, and it has been so nice being with the kids again. The Moon Phases Calendar homework was due Monday, January 7. If your child has not returned it yet, it can still be turned in for partial credit. On Monday, January 14 I will be sending home their next assignment. It is not due until Monday, January 28. This Tuesday we will be taking a field trip to Fiske Planetarium. Please remember to send your student to school with a sack lunch that day. I look forward to visiting with all of you at conferences. See you soon!

Update 12/6/07
By Laney Powers on 12/6/2007
Today we went to the Book Fair Blizzard, and the kids had a great time purchasing things and creating wish lists. I want to thank those of you who donated a book to our classroom library. We have enjoyed reading them! As you know, in theme we are studying Earth, Moon and Sun. Today we were able to create a scaled model of the sun, Earth and moon. The students were surprised to see how large the sun actually is, and we talked about why it appears so small in the sky. Next Thursday the 1/2 classes will begin a holiday unit which will be finished before break. Each teacher will be teaching something different, and the classes will rotate to every teacher by Thursday, December 20th. For my lesson I am in need of volunteers who would like to cut out poinsettia petals. I will be teaching this lesson to about 150 students, so I need a lot of petals! Please let me know if you would like to help. This is something you could take home and do in front of your favorite sitcom (my strategy)! I hope you have a wonderful we ...

Quick Update: November 28
By Laney Powers on 11/28/2007
In theme we will be taking our Force, Balance and Motion test on Monday, December 3rd. As you know the first trimester ended last Tuesday, and report cards will be sent out on Monday, December 10th!

Tuesday, November 13th
By Laney Powers on 11/13/2007
It was so nice seeing many of you at the Gala! Thanks again to everyone who made a donation. Mrs. Barclay did a great job organizing the baskets, and we raised a lot of money! I will be out this Friday, November 16th as well as Monday and Tuesday of next week. Mrs. Painter will be subbing for all of my classes, and the kids are really excited to have her be their teacher! We have also welcomed a new student to our class this week. His name is Mark, and he is a first grader! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving vacation, and I look forward to seeing you after the break!
