A place to update what is happening in our classroom

Update 12/6/07
By Laney Powers on 12/6/2007
Today we went to the Book Fair Blizzard, and the kids had a great time purchasing things and creating wish lists. I want to thank those of you who donated a book to our classroom library. We have enjoyed reading them! As you know, in theme we are studying Earth, Moon and Sun. Today we were able to create a scaled model of the sun, Earth and moon. The students were surprised to see how large the sun actually is, and we talked about why it appears so small in the sky. Next Thursday the 1/2 classes will begin a holiday unit which will be finished before break. Each teacher will be teaching something different, and the classes will rotate to every teacher by Thursday, December 20th. For my lesson I am in need of volunteers who would like to cut out poinsettia petals. I will be teaching this lesson to about 150 students, so I need a lot of petals! Please let me know if you would like to help. This is something you could take home and do in front of your favorite sitcom (my strategy)! I hope you have a wonderful we ...

By Laney Powers on 11/13/2007
It was so nice seeing many of you at the Gala! Thanks again to everyone who made a donation. Mrs. Barclay did a great job organizing the baskets, and we raised a lot of money! I will be out this Friday, November 16th as well as Monday and Tuesday of next week. Mrs. Painter will be subbing for all of my classes, and the kids are really excited to have her be their teacher! We have also welcomed a new student to our class this week. His name is Mark, and he is a first grader! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving vacation, and I look forward to seeing you after the break!

Our field trip to Berry Patch Farms was quite the adventure. Thanks so much to the volunteers who were a huge help! I hope you're enjoying carving the pumpkins. Please read my newsletter regarding Halloween. The kids are getting really excited to show everyone their costumes! Have a great weekend! Go Rockies!

Week of 10/15
By Laney Powers on 10/17/2007
It was so nice seeing all of you at conferences! Your support is greatly needed and appreciated! This week we will continue our study of maps and globes, and I love that some of the kids are bringing in maps they've come across outside of school. We will be visiting Berry Patch Farms next Thursday, so please make sure that your child has a coat and a sack lunch. Thanks to all of you for your gala basket donations. We have received some great items. I hope you enjoy your week. Fall is definately in the air!

Week of 10/1/07
By Laney Powers on 10/3/2007
We have had a very busy week trying to finish up our family unit! We all enjoyed having the students share their family photos, and the family member interviews were so interesting. I wish that I were able to ask my grandparents some of those questions! I hope you enjoyed helping your children with the interviews (I definately appreciate it!), and I think they are great keepsakes! The teachers are getting ready for conferences, and we are doing our best to accommodate everyone. I look forward to seeing you all soon! :)

Update: Week of 9/24
By Laney Powers on 9/26/2007

This week we have been very busy with our family unit! The students have been researching the countries where their families originated from. I have been very impressed by their ability and enthusiasm with this project, and I want to thank all of you for the work you have done with them at home! Recently the 1/2 team has received questions regarding the school's policy on volunteers and absences. I have attached a copy of the Stargate Community Handbook under the documents section of my webpage. I will also continue to post my reading log, spelling packets and math homework there as well! :)

Update: Week of 9/17
By Laney Powers on 9/19/2007
It was so nice meeting all of you on Curriculum Night! Thanks to everyone who signed up to volunteer. I will try to work out some sort of a schedule this weekend. Please be aware that our attendence count window is from Monday, September 24 through Monday, October 8. The official count day is October 1. Please note that our funding is based on this count, so it is very important for your child to be here!

Third Week
By Laney Powers on 9/13/2007

Literacy and math transitions have been an exciting integration of this week. The students were anxious to meet their new teachers, and we were delighted to become acquainted with our needs-based classes! I am looking forward to beginning our academic time together as well as getting to know each student. My hope is for your child to learn, grow and excel through each of his or her endeavers!

Second Week
By Laney Powers on 9/4/2007

We are still working hard to assess every child in math, reading, writing and spelling! We hope to begin switching for math and literacy by Wednesday, September 12th. I have really enjoyed getting to know all of the 1/2 students. Everyday we have been able to partner up with a different homeroom class. The weekly folders and homework folders went out on Tuesday this week, but they will normally be sent home on Mondays. The weekly folders should be signed and returned the next day. Homework folders should be brought back by Friday. Thank you for all of your support, and I look forward to seeing everyone on Curriculum Night!
