This is the study guide for our upcoming Insect test. I plan to give the test on Monday. I will also send home another copy of the insect project guidelines along with the insect that your child has chosen in Monday's folder.
Insect Study Sheet
What do I need to study before the test?
· What are the 7 characteristics of living things (has cells, life cycle, reproduces, uses energy, needs water, produces waste and reacts to environment)?
· Identify insects and know what their characteristics are (6 legs, body parts, habits, exoskeleton, etc).
· Is a spider an insect? NO! What is a spider? An arthropod
· Label the body parts for an ant (antennae, eye, thorax, legs, abdomen, mouth/mandible, head)
· Know the following vocabulary we learned during this unit:
vertebrate
invertebrate
anatomy
exoskeleton
thorax
abdomen
life cycle
metamorphosis(complete & incomplete)
larva,
pupa
nymphs (baby grasshoppers)
waste
cells
There won’t be a vocabulary test, but these words will be used on the test and need to be understood : )
· Understand what is the difference between a complete and an incomplete metamorphosis (butterflies are complete, grasshoppers are incomplete…why?)
You also need to know the stages of each:
Butterfly 1. egg 2. larva 3. pupa 4. adult
Grasshopper 1. egg 2. nymphs 3. adult
· Explain why insects are so important (pollinate, provide jobs, food sources)
· Why are insects so successful? (small size, adaptable, good defenses)
· What was something you learned that you thought was the most interesting?
