This Week’s Assignments
This week we will continue our study on insects. We will continue to observe our Painted Lady caterpillars, and identify the life cycle and anatomy of a butterfly. We will also work on taking notes and writing paragraphs for our insect research projects in class. My goal is to have students begin to finish writing their paragraphs in class by the end of next week to be “published” and placed on their poster board at home.
Homework: Please continue to gather research on your insect project to bring to class and begin to create your 3-D model at home. If you have not returned your presentation sign-up sheet, please do so as spots are filling up! Presentations may be done in multiple formats (video, power point, etc.) however, each child should submit a final copy of their paragraphs, diagrams, etc. on a poster board.

May 3rd-7th is Teacher Appreciation Week. Don’t forget to have your child fill in apples for their favorite past or present teachers! These were sent home in their Monday folders last week, however, extras can be found at the front office.
If you would like to participate- we are requesting that the 1st and 2nd grade families help sponsor our "Cinco de Mayo" luncheon for teachers and staff on Wednesday, May 5th. Your chicken enchiladas, world famous salsa, or mouth watering guacamole would be the perfect contributions to this Mexican themed meal! (Please drop it off at the front office before 10am on Wednesday, May 5th.)
Thank you!
Sean, Natalie, and Gena for getting pencil passes from Mrs. Kenyon.
To all of the volunteers who helped out on our overnight, we couldn’t have done it without you!

INSECT RESEARCH PROJECT
Your project for the next four weeks in Theme is to become an entomologist! You will be choosing three insects that you would like to study and I will narrow it down to just one that you are going to become an expert on. It is your job to find information about that insect. Your goal is to learn as much as you possibly can about that insect, bring the information to school, organize your information into paragraphs (we will do this in class) and then share your information with the class so that we all learn something. This way, we’ll all learn about 23 insects, but you will be the expert on one.
While you are working on your writing at school, you’ll need to work on your visuals at home. Your project requires a poster board and a 3-D model that should be done at home. You will also prepare for your presentation at home, before the date of your class presentation.
This is a big project, but I am going to help you out as much as I can at school. As you prepare your project, keep in mind that your audience is your classmates. Prepare your presentation and write your paragraphs with your peers in mind. You will be evaluated on four components:
1.) Written paragraphs about your insect
2.) Poster board that displays information about your insect
3.) Three-dimensional model of your insect
4.) A 5 to 10 minute presentation on your insect
Attached is the scoring guide that will help you get a top grade! Careful, neat work earns you the best score. Sloppy work gets you a lower score. As you work on your project, think about what makes your insect valuable, unique and interesting. When you do your presentation, try to convince the class that your insect is magnificent!
TIMELINE
Week 1 (April 26th)-You will be given one of your choices of an insect to study this week. You need to begin your research at home and be bringing in your materials to school. Make sure that you have all your materials (books, magazines, articles, and internet sources) here by Monday, May 3rd! This way you have the weekend to gather up all your research. KEEP A COPY OF EVERYTHING AT HOME SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO BRING PAPERS BACK AND FORTH FROM HOME TO SCHOOL!!!
Week 2 (May 3rd)-While working on highlighting, note taking and paragraph writing in class you can start putting your poster together and creating a 3-D model at home. Your 3-D model can be made of ANYTHING. Have fun and be creative!
Week 3 (May 10th)- Finish up all four components at home, while preparing for your presentation.
Week 4 (May 17th-end of the year) - In class presentations will begin. I will be assigning each of you a day to present so that your parents can come and see you if they want and also so that you can be prepared on the day of your presentation =)
Projects are due on the day of the in class presentation! (Look for sign-up sheets in your child’s Monday Folder!)

Ms. Heilbron is very happy to be returning to Stargate for her seventh year. Kris had taught for three years in an elementary school in Georgia, where she also received her Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. After that, she took a brief break from the education field and moved to France where she lived for almost two years. Kris is currently working on her Administrative License, as well as an Education Specialist degree with an emphasis in gifted instruction, through a program at the University of Colorado, Denver, with expected graduation in April of 2010. Although she is a native of California, she has lived in Colorado for almost seven years. During her free time, she loves to have adventures. Some of her favorite activities include skiing, white water rafting, and mountain biking, hiking, and travelling to new and exciting places.
