Who is Mrs. Huey?
This year I am so blessed with so many great students and families. I am so excited for this year. A little background on me is that I grew up in Vermont. I came out here to Colorado for skiing and college, many, many moons ago. I have a B.S. in Earth Science and my Elementary Licensure from UNC. I started teaching here at Stargate 7 years ago. I have a husband , that I met my first year out here, and a four year old little boy who attends a local Montessori preschool. I am currently expecting my second child. I enjoy being outdoors and spending time with friends and family, when I am not grading or planning : ) I love Stargate, for I love working with such eager learners and great loving families. I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know all of you!
Weekly Update
This week in class we will be doing alot of 'Get to Know You' and 'All About Me' activities. I will be starting some of the pre-assessments in order to learn about what your child knows already and what level they are at for reading, writing, handwriting, spelling and math.
Testing will take place over the next two weeks. After we determine their ability levels we will group them into 'like ability' Literacy and Math classes. We won't start switching for Literacy and Math until the second week of September. On Curriculum Night, September 9th, you will get to meet your child's Literacy and Math teacher.
Drop Off and Pickup
The first morning bell is at 7:55 a.m. and students need to be lined up outside and ready to go before that. Our class lines up on the West side of the building (playground side), along the wall North of the Kindergarten fenced in playground area. The tardy bell is at 8:00. If you come after that you need to sign in at the front desk to get a tardy pass before going to class. Parents are not allowed to come through classroom doors in the morning with their child. If you need to help your child bring something in, you need to sign in up front with a visitors pass. Thank you for remembering this and helping to keep our school secure and safe.
Pick-up is at 3:00 p.m. out front, just East of the main doors. Students who are in car pools will be waiting on the West side of the main doors, by the flag pole with their car pool. When picking up your child from me please make sure I know that you are leaving. I will wave to you and say goodbye to you to let you know it is ok to leave. It helps me keep better track of who is coming and going that way. There are two ways to pickup your child. You can park in the parking lot and walk up or you may drive through the loop. If you drive through the loop you need to drive up to the curb, by where we are waiting, so I can safely put your child in your car. You can not park in the loop!!! If you want to park, you need to do so in the parking lot, the earlier the better while there are still spots
School Lunches and Snack
School lunches can be purchased online at (www.stargateschool.org) under the Parents tab by selecting School Store. You can also view the menu for the month under the Students tab by selecting Lunch Menu. School lunches are $3.75 this year. If students don't like the main entree for the day they can choose one of the other daily items: beef or chicken Cup of Noodle, veggie burger, P.B &J, or a small garden salad. Students can also bring cash or you can write a check for them that can be held in their account. You can always pay ahead in their account for emergencies or for convenience. When they are running low you will be notified.
Everyday we have snack time at 10:00. Students do need to bring in their own snack everyday. There is emergency snack available for when we forget. Everyone brings in one bulk snack item when they are Student of the Week for our emergency snack cupboard. Occasionally I might request emergency snack donations if we are running low. Currently we are set for the next couple weeks.
Specials
This week (and for the next five weeks) we have Instrumental Music and Art for specials. We have one special a day alternating daily. For this week we have Instrumental Music on Tuesday and Thursday. We have Art this week on Wednesday and Friday. I will post the specials schedule on my calendar as well for a reference for you. We will have a new set of specials every 6 weeks, with a total of 6 specials (Instrumental Music, Art, P.E., Music, Spanish and Computers). We have each special twice a year for 6 weeks at a time.
Weekly Schedule
On my home page, at the bottom left you will notice a document area. I have put there our weekly schedule. For the next three weeks we will not have Literacy and Math, so disregard those. We will be in homeroom during those times.
How to Contact Me
As always I have an open door policy for any questions or concerns that might arise over the year. The best way to contact me is by email at heidi.huey@adams12.org. I check it daily during the week and depending on my schedule, sometimes on the weekends (unless I am camping like this weekend :). You can also call me at 303-450-3936 at ext. 154 to leave a message or you can leave a message up front if it is an emergency. I will always (unless I am super, super busy) respond to your email within 24 hours. Pick up and drop off time is not a good time to talk to me. More often than not, if you tell me something, I will also ask you to email me so I can remember : ) If email or voice mail does not meet your needs, you can also contact me to set up an appointment to meet with me before or after school.
Final Thoughts
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns while we get into our routines : ) I hope you all have a great week.
